I just found out that 10 (count 'em!!) youth from the Unitarian Church of Vancouver are heading to New York City for the UU UNO seminar for April 5-8, 2006.
Wow! Last year, DLRE Caroline Farley went and was blown away! The theme this year is:
PEOPLE POVERTY POWERNot going this year! - I'm encouraging you to think about it for next year. I think it's a fabulous opportunity.

Early Bird registration deadline for the Annual Conference and Meeting is April 1st, 2006.
Individuals, schools, colleges, universities, community groups and businesses can nominate a young person 18 years and younger who exemplifies the qualities of citizenship that strengthen our social fabric and enrich our national life. This young person must have made a truly exceptional contribution in any number of areas. This could include, but is certainly not limited to: community involvement, promotion of Canadian values, and environmentally friendly initiatives.

This is an event for youth ages 12-20 from all faiths to get to know one another, have fun and learn about each other’s religious communities and traditions. A weekend of workshops, worship, community building, games, music, fun and much more ...
Event begins Friday at 6pm and ends Sunday at 1pm. Starting Saturday at 5pm is the All Souls Springtime Soiree. Family and friends of all ages are welcome to attend this part of the conference (see include flyer for more details). Since this event is for groups from all faith communities we want to be as inclusive as possible. We have made it open to 12-20 year olds since the definition of youth varies within various communities. All dietary needs will be accommodated as long as we are made aware of them on the registration form. Unitarians believe that everyone has the right for a free and responsible search for truth and meaning, therefore everyone’s beliefs will be respected. Please let us know ways that we can honor your faith.
Date: March 24-26, 2006. Groups should arrive as close to 6PM as possible.

Daylene Marshall #105 – 1221 Burnaby St,Details: An adult sponsor from each faith group must accompany youth, for safety reasons the adult to youth ratio may not exceed 1:8. We ask that one youth from each community be designated to be a part of the Spirit Committee (youth should have some leadership experience). The Spirit Committee is a group of youth and adults that work together to ensure the spirit of the conference is abided by and facilitates conflict resolution as well as deals with any situation where conference rules are broken. During the all ages event, the youth and their sponsors at the conference will be sleeping in a separate area then other guests that may spend the night.

Chris Michell, National Social Justice Coordinator is trying to answer that question by asking youth to fill out a short online survey on their views on Social Justice (SJ). The objective is to hear from at least every youth group in the country, and 33 responses have been received to date. Some early findings: SJ is an important part of UUism for Youth; youth feel their congregation is doing enough SJ work but their youth group is not; and the majority of SJ projects are on Human Rights issues.

Hi All,
it was great to see you all out, there were 16 youth is all! That's the most I've seen all at once. Check-in was good, with everyone enjoying the "Holydays". The comments got a little rowdy on occasion - so I'd like to remind you, that R-E-S-P-E-C-T is what its' all about.
I have a family commitment this Friday so I can't make it to the farmhouse. I've talked to Kay, she should be able to make it and will be following up on this email. You need to work it out amongst yourselves to get a second adult.
As I mentioned, we need to find some additional advisors for these situations. They don't need to be available for every meeting but dependable when called upon.
Kay want's to set the dates for the Feb meetings and talk over doing a workshop with Jen and doing some type of "meet & greet" with the RE "kids" who will be coming up this spring/fall.
Some of their parents have express a BIG interest in a Sunday YRUU session. How's the group's take on that?

Happy New Year from the youth!
By the time this is read, digested and processed it will be 2006! Hard to believe that another year has rolled by, a new one on the verge. Turkey, ham, stuffing and their vegetarian equivalents will be memories by now, hopefully happy ones. The youth have had a busy fall season, going back to the Relax-a-Con in North Vancouver in early November where 8 Victoria youth became part of the 43-strong youth contingent at the Regional Gathering. They had a blast! (And even got a little sleep!) D.I. remained on as rep for the BC YAC, congrats!. Since then the youth have helped with the organizing, selling and schlepping of the Outset Media fundraiser for the church. Many thanks to T.I., K.B., D.I., M.W., B.F., D.B. and L.B. for their work on the fundraiser, as well as to M&S for their HUUGE efforts on our behalf ... it was a great project with excellent results for both the church and the purchasers! We ended the fall season with a youth Christmas party held Dec 16th. (at the time of writing I am hopeful the youth might even participate in the concert?...) It’s been great to see a renewed 'presence' in the larger church community, our youth are just so darn cool to be around.
Meetings restart January 13th and 27th.
On a personal note I will be stepping back from my role as youth advisor for the immediate future, due to increasing work commitments as well as my desire to continue supporting the OWL’s group until April. However, the group is in the most excellent hands of M.T. as well as the Devine MS. J. who have tons of energy and creative ideas racing through their veins ...
To all the youth: it has been both a joy and an honour to be part of you, thanks for letting me into your space!
